From Wikipedia:
A gap year (also known as "year out", "year off", "deferred year", "bridging year", "overseas experience", "time off" and "time out") is a term that refers to a prolonged period (often, but not always, a year) between a life stage. The most popular gap years are taken pre or during matriculation in a university or college, between college and graduate school and a profession, during a career change, pre or post marriage or having a first child and pre or post retirement. It is generally a practice undertaken by those from developed countries
I think the idea of a gap year should more widely promoted. In Canada, we seem to rush from one stage in life to the next in the race to become a slave to the trappings of our material society. I am thrilled to see more students taking time off to work and explore life before amassing heaps of debt to get a degree they don’t know what to do with.
People can also take time off between all stages of life to simply EXPLORE the possibilities . . . play it a little dangerous . . . take a few risks.
A gap year is a great time to travel, volunteer time to a charity or try something new. But it doesn’t all have to be about taking a vow of poverty for a year – there is money to be made during a gap year. There are programs where you can teach English in a foreign country and get paid to do it, grab a job doing something totally different in your own community, try working from home and spending more time with your family . . . see where it all leads!
